Our Founder’s Favourite Spring Wine Varietals

The daffodils are blooming, Mother’s Day is approaching us, and our first official long weekend of the summer is on the horizon.

A red wine to combine with popular BBQ meals was recently requested of me. Although burgers, steak, sausages, prawns, beer can chicken, grilled corn, and ribs have diverse tastes, the wine selection can reflect something other than this. Pinot Noir is the archetypal food-friendly red wine and is my top pick.

Ontario routinely makes classic, textured wines, which I enjoy and hope you also do.

I prefer to start with a sparkling before the BBQ meal since it is a refreshing and thirst-quenching beverage. The Icon Blanc De Noir is one of my current effervescent picks. It comes in a beautiful package and makes an impressive gift for the host, which is a great bonus! This versatile wine has aromas of lemon, pear, biscuit, and toast and hints of minerality and tropical fruit. Lively effervescence and silky texture on the palate, with lemon curd, melon, and a touch of nuttiness, leading to a long, rich finish.

You can’t go wrong by offering another one of my fave wines. Even for fans of white wine, rosé is a fantastic alternative at this time of year. It is an excellent transitional beverage from sparkling wine, and I like to think of it as red wine for white wine drinkers.

For those who prefer more intense red wines, I recommend. The south-facing slopes capture the day’s sun and produce award-quality fruit used to create this estate syrah. Aromatics of white pepper, black fruit and cigar box prevail on the nose. The palate is rich with jammy notes of strawberry and blackberry accented by spicy licorice, clove, leather and smoke.

Don’t hesitate to try any of my favourite varietals mentioned because there’s no going wrong.
